PRESS RELEASE Columbia Heights Education Campus Teacher Wins Life-Changing Teacher Award Receives $5,000 cash prize based on student and family nominations WASHINGTON, D.C. (May 26, 2020) – Gabriela Ramirez, a 7th grade Spanish Language Arts Teacher at Columbia Heights Education Campus (CHEC) in Ward 1, has won the prestigious Honored Schools Life-Changing Teacher Award. As part of the award, Ramirez received a $5,000 cash prize. More than a dozen of Ramirez’s students used the Honored Schools online platform to recognize Ramirez and nominate her for the award. Many students wrote about Ramirez’s compassion and ability to form relationships that serve as the foundation for trust and learning. Students also noted that Ramirez is someone who they know will always be supportive while also challenging them to put forth their best effort to advance their learning. “ Ms. Ramirez has taught me a lot this semester. She helps people when they are struggling or need help and her door is always open if you have problems. She has not only helped me with school, but when I was having problems with a student she helped me through it and after it, everything was fine. ” - CHEC student Miracle Fortune “ Ms. Ramirez changed my life so much because at first I would always skip my classes and get low grades because it is not the best at home, but Ms. Ramirez changed it all and now I go to school happy and healthy .” - CHEC student Shy'ane Witherspoon “ Ms. Ramirez is the best teacher I have had in my life. She is awesome. She’s nice, caring, funny, and positive. She made me and other students stay positive and never give up .” - CHEC student Amy Cardoza Read all of the student recognition stories submitted about Ms. Ramirez on the Honored Schools Honor Roll: honoredschools.org/the-honor-roll/ About Honored Schools Honored Schools is a new program from Honored, a national nonprofit, nonpartisan organization dedicated to keeping great teachers in the classroom and to inspiring a new generation of talent to pursue teaching. Honored Schools is aimed at recognizing great teachers, elevating student and family voices, and creating a consistent culture of teacher appreciation within school communities. Through the Honored Schools online platform, students and family members within each participating school community are encouraged to recognize great teachers by telling a story of how the teacher made a difference in their life. Every teacher who is recognized receives their student’s story and is publicly recognized at their school and on the Honored Schools website. Also, each recognition story serves as a nomination for the annual $5,000 Honored Schools Life-Changing Teacher Award. For more information about Honored Schools, visit honoredschools.org. Thank you to all parents for participating in our Parent Teacher Conference Day! It was wonderful to see all of you! As we enter the last week of School Year 20-21, I have some important updates to share with you: This is the last week of school, and all students will be presenting a portfolio reflection of their work. Please ask your child when he or she is presenting, and join them in the session! It will be wonderful to have you see and hear what students have been learning. If you need to know when your child is presenting, please go to the website, chec.dc.org Tuesday morning to find the schedule. All students must complete their assignments this week, in order to have them count towards their grade for the Fourth Advisory. Please look at your child’s Aspen account to see how they are doing with their assignments, and contact the teacher or administrator if you have any questions. Summer School will be virtual, and will start on June 22 and end on July 24. There are a variety of opportunities, and we will send you a complete schedule and program, once it is finalized. School Year 20-21 will begin on August 31st, and will most probably be a combination of virtual and in-person. You will have opportunities to provide your ideas and feedback about how to make school safe in the new school year, through surveys and Parent Town Halls. Please be sure your child is enrolled for next year by June 15. Please contact me at Maria.Tukeva@k12.dc.gov if you have any questions about enrollment, or need help to enroll. Thank you, families, for your partnership with us. Let’s all finish the School Year strong!
